Caregiver in Peoria AZ
If you’re not already keeping a journal as a family caregiver, you might want to reconsider. Some of these prompts can help you to dig a little deeper into your emotions.
How Do You Feel Right Now?
This sounds pretty straightforward, but some family caregivers feel so turned inside out by their circumstances that they really don’t know what they’re feeling at any given moment. Remember that there’s no such thing as a bad emotion and just be honest with yourself.
What Are You Afraid of Right Now?
There’s a lot to be afraid of when you’re a family caregiver, but some of those fears start to look bigger than they actually are. When you’re feeling paralyzed by fear, really look at what you’re afraid of. What is actually happening in the situation and what is the worst that could happen?
What Do You Want the Outcome of a Situation to Be?
Sometimes you may want your loved one to conform to your wishes so badly that you forget that she needs to make up her own mind in some cases. That’s when it can help to really look at the situation and determine what you want the outcome to be. For example, if you want your loved one to stop smoking but she’s being stubborn, what do you want the outcome to be?
What Do You Feel You Have Lost as a Family Caregiver?
Resentment can build up when you feel that you’ve lost too much to a given situation. As a family caregiver, it’s not unusual to feel that you’re losing quite a bit to your caregiving duties. You might have to give up a career, for example, or time with your own children. If you’re feeling resentment at all, looking at those losses can help you to realize that you make choices every day and some of those choices can be more difficult than others.
What Can You Do to Take Care of Yourself?
This one can be really tough for family caregivers because taking care of themselves tends to fall way down the priority list. Set aside a page in your journal and make a list of all the different things that you can do to pamper yourself or take care of yourself. Then when you have time to yourself, you don’t have to wonder what to do with it.
Some family caregivers take their journaling with them when they get some time to themselves to really dig deeper. Let your loved one’s elderly care providers take over for the afternoon and get some clarity for yourself.
